Barcelona Surpasses National Growth Averages in 2024 Economic Recovery
The city reached its current economic position after steady gains in output and jobs that began pulling ahead of national and regional averages in 2024.
How we reported this

Barcelona's GDP expanded 3.8 percent in 2024 to reach €107.7 billion, placing the local economy 8.8 percent above its pre-pandemic size. That figure outpaced growth recorded in Catalonia at 3.6 percent, Spain at 3.2 percent and the European Union at 1.0 percent. The advance marked the point at which accumulated output finally surpassed the level recorded before the pandemic shock.
Employment gains built on earlier output increases
The Barcelona province posted a record 2.6 million occupied persons in 2024, a 1.9 percent rise from the prior year, while the unemployment rate eased to 8.7 percent. Those employment totals followed directly from the 2024 GDP expansion and set the base for further hiring into 2025. More than 43,100 additional positions appeared across the 13 Barcelona counties through the third quarter of 2025, concentrated in postal activities, wholesale trade, storage, transport and food services.
Internal demand sustained the momentum into early 2025, producing a 4 percent rise in gross added value. Services, and specifically information-technology activities, accounted for the largest share of that increase. The same period saw registered tourism reach 1.9 million guests in the first quarter, a 3 percent gain, while average rental prices fell 5.1 percent under regulatory measures already in force.
Sector shifts that shaped the present level
The combination of stronger services output and continued job creation in logistics and hospitality moved the local economy from the post-pandemic trough to its present scale. Growth in information-technology activities and the listed service branches supplied the concrete channels through which earlier GDP gains translated into higher employment and added value. Data compiled for 2024 and the first three quarters of 2025 show the sequence of increases that produced today's totals.
Residents and businesses can track quarterly employment releases from the provincial statistics office and monitor rental-price reports issued under current housing rules to follow the next readings on these indicators.
