Barcelona Province Hits Record Employment in 2024, Tech Sector Surges

Employment in the province of Barcelona climbed to fresh peaks in 2024, with both the number of social-security contributors and total jobs hitting records that cover neighborhoods such as Barceloneta.

The figures arrive at a moment when residents are weighing local job security against wider economic pressures, including energy costs and shifting work patterns that affect daily life in the port-side district.

Tech sector anchors growth

Barceloneta sits inside the Barcelonés comarca, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of the province’s technology-industry jobs. The report records 130,485 people affiliated to the sector province-wide, representing 4.7 percent of all employment and spread across 5,037 companies. That concentration means many local workers already feel the pull of digital roles even if they commute only a short distance from the waterfront.

Job counts rose in every comarca except Moianès, while contributor numbers fell only in Lluçanès. Unemployment rates improved in almost every district, though Anoia and Bages still posted the highest figures at 10.9 percent and 10.0 percent respectively.

Gender gaps remain visible

Women’s share of paid work has edged upward in recent years yet stays below half of total employment. At the same time women make up more than 57 percent of those registered as unemployed, a pattern that local job centers in Barceloneta continue to track when matching residents to openings.

The Cambra de Comerç de Barcelona and Diputación de Barcelona report, released this month, supplies the underlying data. Analysts expect the same upward employment trend to carry into hiring decisions this summer, giving Barceloneta workers a clearer window to pursue training in the expanding technology fields before the next seasonal shift.
