Ciutat Vella Crime Falls 13.3% as Arrests Surge Across District

Crime recorded across Ciutat Vella fell 13.3 percent last year, moving from 44,430 incidents to 38,513, according to figures presented by the Ciutat Vella Local Security Board. The resolution rate reached 46.7 percent, an increase of 4.1 percentage points, while police made 10,393 arrests in total.

Residents in Barceloneta and the district’s other neighborhoods have pressed for stronger action on thefts, drug sales and street disorder for years. The new numbers arrive after police expanded patrols and stepped up direct contact with people who live and work here, giving the data immediate weight for anyone weighing daily safety in the area.

Targeted patrols and community contact

City Police reorganized shifts under the Intensive Neighbourhood Security and Coexistence Plan that began last summer. Officers now cover 28 fixed points in the four neighborhoods by day and 24 points at night, focusing on thefts, drug sales and noise complaints. Mossos d’Esquadra doubled foot patrols under their Trust Plan that started in February, pairing the extra visibility with regular meetings involving shopkeepers, teachers, older residents and youth groups. Neighbourhood Police teams have held sessions to gather local impressions and share updates on operations.

Property crimes, which account for 88 percent of the total, fell 14.9 percent to 33,817 cases. Thefts make up 68.8 percent of those offences, while muggings involving violence or intimidation dropped 6.5 percent. Since January, officers dismantled 51 drug-dealing points and made 72 related arrests, plus 11 more arrests at cannabis clubs used as sales sites.

Cleaning pilot adds to results

A separate pilot cleaning campaign launched in February cut illegal rubbish dumping by 66 percent and reduced detected anti-social behaviour by 56 percent. The same period saw City Police and Mossos coordinate more closely with the district administration and the justice system, actions residents’ groups say have eased long-standing pressure points along Barceloneta’s waterfront streets and markets.

Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona Provincial Prosecutor are completing an agreement that will place a dedicated City Police unit inside the Prosecutor’s Office. The unit will handle support tasks such as gathering records on repeat offenders, locating victims and assisting inspections of premises linked to crime or labour issues. Officials expect the arrangement to speed up cases that affect daily life in the district.
