Barceloneta Secures €31M Investment to Upgrade Housing and Public Spaces
The neighbourhood plan targets long-standing resident needs ahead of increased visitor pressure from the America’s Cup.

Barceloneta will receive a 31 million euro package of improvements to facilities, housing and public spaces through 2028. The spending plan comes from the city council and forms part of a budget agreement with the ERC municipal group.
The timing reflects years of resident complaints about summer crowds and the added strain expected from the America’s Cup events this year. Officials have set aside ten million euros specifically as a return for the neighbourhood in Ciutat Vella linked to the sailing competition.
Breakdown of spending across key areas
Facilities account for 18 million euros. Projects include covering the La Maquinista courts, extending the Escola Bressol La Mar, creating a new community and youth centre at the former Cooperativa Segle XX, opening a new centre for organisations along Passeig de Joan de Borbó and establishing a primary healthcare centre at the former Clínica Barceloneta site.
Housing improvements total 2.2 million euros and cover renovation of two blocks that will refresh the public stock and add homes. The sites are the 81 elderly homes at C/ Pinzón, 12, and the 18 flats at Passeig Joan de Borbó, 44.
Public space work receives 10.8 million euros, supplemented by 3.5 million euros from the comprehensive improvement and maintenance plan, for a combined 14.3 million euros. Measures range from a full overhaul of Passeig de Joan de Borbó and a new children’s area in Parc de la Barceloneta to pavement repairs, new toilets and reurbanisation of Carrer de Pepe Rubianes plus four streets in the sea-mountain corridor and Pl. Poetà Boscà.
Additional port infrastructure work
Separate investment from the City Council, the Government of Catalonia and Port de Barcelona will also reach the neighbourhood. Planned work covers the northern mouth of the port, the tinglados at Moll Orienta, renewal of the Llotja building and upgrades to the fishing area at the Sant Sebastià groyne.
