Barceloneta Launches €31M Overhaul Through 2028, Targeting Crowds and Housing
City outlines spending on facilities, housing stock and streets to ease summer crowds and meet resident requests tied to the America’s Cup.

Barceloneta will receive a 31 million euro package of works on buildings, homes and open areas between now and 2028, according to the city announcement released last year. The spending covers upgrades at several named sites inside the neighbourhood and forms part of a budget deal struck with the ERC group at city hall.
The timing matters because Barceloneta already faces heavy visitor numbers each summer and will host additional crowds during the America’s Cup events. Residents have pressed for years for better services and repairs, and the new plan includes a 10 million euro reserve specifically to offset impacts from the sailing competition on this waterfront district.
Facilities and housing work
Of the total sum, 18 million euros will go toward buildings that serve daily life in the neighbourhood. Plans call for covering the La Maquinista courts, extending the Escola Bressol La Mar nursery, creating a community and youth centre inside the former Cooperativa Segle XX, opening a new centre for local organisations along Passeig de Joan de Borbó, and converting the former Clínica Barceloneta into a primary healthcare centre. Two blocks of public housing will also be renovated with 2.2 million euros, updating 81 flats for older residents at C/ Pinzón 12 and 18 units at Passeig Joan de Borbó 44.
Street and open-space projects
Public-space spending reaches 10.8 million euros plus an extra 3.5 million euros already committed under the comprehensive improvement and maintenance plan, bringing the combined public-space total to 14.3 million euros. Work includes a full redesign of Passeig de Joan de Borbó, a new play area inside Parc de la Barceloneta, pavement and street-element repairs along Passeig Marítim, re-paving of Carrer de Pepe Rubianes and four other streets in the sea-mountain corridor, plus Pl. Poetà Boscà. Damaged sidewalks across the neighbourhood will be fixed and three new public toilet facilities added. Separate port upgrades at the northern mouth, Moll Orienta wharf, Llotja building and Sant Sebastià fishing area are funded outside the municipal total through agreements with the regional government and Port de Barcelona.
