Barceloneta Secures €31 Million Investment Through 2028 for Infrastructure Overhaul

Barceloneta will receive a 31 million euro package for structural upgrades over the next four years, according to a May 2024 announcement from the city mayor’s office. The plan targets facilities, public housing and open spaces in response to resident requests and added visitor pressure expected during the America’s Cup sailing event.

The timing aligns with an existing budget deal between the city government and the ERC municipal group. A separate 10 million euro reserve was set aside specifically to offset impacts from the international sailing competition on this waterfront district, which already experiences heavy seasonal use each summer.

Targeted projects across the neighbourhood

Work will begin on several concrete sites. La Maquinista sports courts will gain a roof, the Escola Bressol La Mar nursery will expand, and a new community and youth centre will open inside the former Cooperativa Segle XX building. A fresh centre for local organisations is planned along Passeig de Joan de Borbó, while the old Clínica Barceloneta site will become a primary healthcare centre. Two residential blocks will also be renovated: the 81-unit senior housing block at C/ Pinzón 12 and the 18 flats at Passeig Joan de Borbó 44.

Street-level changes include a full redesign of Passeig de Joan de Borbó, a new play area inside Parc de la Barceloneta, pavement repairs along Passeig Marítim, and re-paving of Carrer de Pepe Rubianes plus four other streets in the sea-to-mountain corridor and Pl. Poetà Boscà. Damaged sidewalks will be fixed throughout the area and three new public toilet facilities will be installed. An additional 3.5 million euro slice from the city’s comprehensive improvement and maintenance plan brings total public-space spending to 14.3 million euros.

Funding mix and next steps

The 31 million euro total breaks down into 18 million for facilities, 2.2 million for housing renewal and 10.8 million for public space, according to the same city announcement. Beyond municipal money, the City Council has already coordinated with the Government of Catalonia and Port de Barcelona on separate port-mouth and wharf upgrades that will also affect the northern edge of the neighbourhood.

Construction is scheduled to run through 2028. Residents can track progress on individual projects through the city’s public works notices, which will list start dates and any temporary street closures as work advances.
