One long-term resident helped steer the effort from those initial meetings into running both a community bookstore and a kiosk that opened in 2018. The kiosk alone moved more than twenty people from unemployment into paid roles over the following years. Another effort turned discarded boat sails into bags sold under the Takatà label, keeping the work close to the waterfront skills already present in the neighborhood.
These steps grew out of three clear lines set at the beginning: jobs, training, and support for local and social enterprises. The projects deliberately stayed rooted in what the sea already offers rather than importing outside models.
Shared Decisions and Next Steps
More than twenty organizations now sit at the same table, mixing schools, municipal facilities, grassroots collectives and small businesses. The group keeps decisions horizontal so that outside pressures do not pull the focus away from daily neighborhood needs such as job access. Participants say this structure has helped keep the work practical and visible on the streets rather than turning into abstract policy talk.
Looking ahead, the same groups plan to keep expanding training sessions and small trading spots that match the skills already in the area.
