City secures Barceloneta clinic site for expanded primary care centre
City acquisition of the former Clínica Barceloneta buildings at Pescadors 82-94 sets the stage for a larger neighbourhood health facility after years of limited service at Hospital del Mar.
How we reported this
The Barcelona City Council has completed the purchase of the former Clínica Barceloneta and three adjoining structures on C/ Pescadors, giving the neighbourhood a dedicated site for its new primary care centre.
The move follows years of temporary arrangements that left residents relying on a smaller space inside Hospital del Mar. The buildings, which last provided intermediate care until their closure a decade ago, now stand ready for conversion into a fuller primary care operation.
How the purchase came together
Approval came through the Government Commission in December 2023, fulfilling a commitment reached during the October joint commission between the city and the Catalan government. That session reviewed progress on the Municipal Charter and identified several primary care centres, including the one serving Barceloneta, as priorities. A further agreement signed on 23 June between the city, the Ministry for Health and the Barcelona Health Consortium reinforced the commitment to upgrade neighbourhood facilities.
The nearly 3,000 square metres across ground floor plus upper levels will allow room for the additional specialist services that have been added to primary care in recent years. Residents have watched the old clinic sit unused since 2014 while services operated under constrained conditions at the nearby hospital.
Next steps for the site
Alongside the purchase, the city, the Catalan Health Service and Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili signed a management agreement. Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili will handle upkeep, security and surveillance until the buildings are formally transferred to the Catalan Health Service for operation as the CAP Barceloneta.
Local residents can expect the new centre to bring dieticians, physiotherapists, dental hygiene staff and emotional well-being services under one roof once the handover occurs. The city has published the decision on its official site at https://www.barcelona.cat/infobarcelona/en/tema/urban-planning-and-infrastructures/aprovada-la-compra-clinica-barceloneta_1389002.html.
