Barcelona Infrastructure Projects Focus on Resident Daily Life and Neighborhood Access

Over 50 infrastructure projects are underway in Barcelona this summer, including critical expansion stages of the FGC Line 8 between Plaça d'Espanya and Gràcia and Metro Line 9, with an estimated investment of €30.2 million. These initiatives form part of wider renewal efforts that touch transport links and public spaces used by residents every day.
Changes to Transport Links and Street Access
Residents rely on the FGC Line 8 and Metro Line 9 for regular travel across neighborhoods. The current expansion stages target sections that connect central areas with districts such as Gràcia. At the same time, European Next Generation funds supply €33 million for transformations on Via Laietana, Avinguda Meridiana and Carrer de Pi i Margall, which include wider pavements, segregated bike lanes and zero-emissions bus services. These measures address how people move on foot, by bicycle and by public transport in their immediate surroundings.
Renewal Across Multiple Districts
The city has launched its largest infrastructure renewal program covering 29 districts with over €200 million allocated. Within this program, a €18.4 million overhaul of the sewer system upgrades more than 10 km of pipes and is expected to finish by 2027. The municipality also secured a €20 million agreement for 58 local district projects in 2025, while the total budget for the Pla Endreça urban upkeep program has exceeded €435 million. These allocations support upkeep that affects streets and services in the areas where people live and work.
Transport Investment Scale
Catalan authorities have announced a €3.3 billion transport infrastructure investment program, with tenders for €1.8 billion already announced for completing the central section of Metro Line 9 and expanding 366 km of roads. The scale of this spending reaches projects that residents encounter during commutes and local journeys.
