Barcelona city authorities have scheduled forty-nine projects this summer to upgrade streets, rail lines and utility networks. The programme covers renewal of urban spaces, rail infrastructure and primary services for water, gas and electricity, according to an announcement published on the municipal website on 27 June 2024.
The decision to intensify activity during the summer months follows a deliberate effort to reduce inconvenience for residents while major works proceed. Officials expect the concentrated schedule to keep daytime disruption lower than would occur during busier periods of the year.
Street and avenue upgrades
Several prominent road schemes are already under way or due to begin. They include the second stage of covering the Ronda de Dalt in Horta-Guinardó between Avinguda Vallcarca and the Institut Vall d’Hebron, the remodelling of La Rambla, Via Laietana and Ronda Sant Antoni, and continued work on Avinguda Diagonal linked to the first phase of tram connection and at Parc de les Glòries. Eight large resurfacing contracts will renew nearly 100,000 square metres of asphalt as part of the Pla Endreça. Additional street-calming measures across the districts will widen pavements and introduce curbless paving.
Rail and utility works
Extension of FGC railway line 8 continues with construction of an emergency shaft in Carrer de Consell de Cent and service crossings near Plaça d’Espanya. On the metro network, lines 2, 4, 5 and 10 Nord will see maintenance that brings temporary closures between Sagrada Família and Paral·lel, Collblanc and Cornellà Centre, Selva de Mar and La Pau, and Gorg and La Salut. Utility improvements include repairs to safe-water, natural-gas and power networks, the final stage of a new drainage sump in Carrer de Vila i Vilà, and seven projects to expand the groundwater network for greater resilience.
