Barceloneta Approves €31 Million Plan Renovating Housing, Expanding Public Spaces

Barcelona City Council has approved a 31 million euro improvement plan for Barceloneta that schedules work through 2028. The plan includes renovation of two housing blocks and directs 14.3 million euros toward public space improvements.

The area will also receive a 10 million euro reserve for America's Cup-related neighborhood improvements under the city's budget agreement with ERC. These allocations follow earlier efforts to address local infrastructure needs.

Healthcare capacity changes

CAP Barceloneta primary healthcare center was provisionally enlarged in 2026 with 130 square meters of new space and five new consultation rooms. A separate new 9 million euro facility is planned for 2030 and is projected to triple current capacity.

These changes affect daily access to primary care services for residents in the neighborhood. The provisional addition provides immediate extra consultation space while the larger project remains scheduled for later completion.

Land management and prior housing efforts

Barcelona authorities acquired 62.8 hectares of coastal land between Barceloneta and Sant Adrià de Besòs. The city gained exclusive management rights and committed to using the land exclusively for public needs, with over 100 million euros in planned coastal development investment.

An earlier master plan for Barceloneta aimed to renovate dilapidated quarter homes and refurbish housing stock but achieved only bold planning without sufficient public investment or resident cooperation. The current plan focuses on specific blocks and public spaces rather than broad housing stock renewal.

Work on the approved projects is scheduled through 2028, with the healthcare facility timeline extending to 2030. Residents can expect phased implementation of the listed improvements based on the council decisions.
