Barcelona Invests 31 Million Euros to Overhaul Barceloneta Housing and Beaches

Barcelona City Council has approved a 31 million euro structural improvement plan for the Barceloneta neighborhood covering facilities, housing and public space, with work scheduled through 2028. The plan forms part of local government decisions on infrastructure and services that directly shape daily conditions for residents in the area.

Spain's Ministry of Finance transferred 62.8 hectares of coastal land between Barceloneta and Sant Adrià de Besòs to Barcelona City Council, granting the municipality exclusive management rights for public use only. Additional infrastructure investments have been agreed between the City Council, Catalonia Government and Port de Barcelona to improve the northern port mouth, tinglados at Moll Orienta and the fishing area at Sant Sebastià groyne.

Housing Renovations and Local Services

The improvement plan includes renovating two housing blocks to add new homes, specifically 81 flats for the elderly at C/ Pinzón and 12 and 18 flats at Passeig Joan de Borbó, 44. These renovations are expected to contribute to the supply of housing options within the neighborhood, supporting services for older residents who rely on local facilities.

A 14.3 million euro investment is dedicated specifically to improving public space in Barceloneta, including street revamps and public space renewals. These works target infrastructure elements such as streets and open areas that residents use for daily movement and community activities.

Work under the 31 million euro plan is scheduled through 2028. The government says the combined measures will address facilities, housing and public space in the neighborhood, with management of the transferred coastal land limited to public use.
