Born Council Directs €4.2 Million to Expand Community Services Programs

Born City Council on July 7 passed a measure increasing allocations to the Social Services Fund by €550,000 for the coming fiscal year. The 7-2 vote sets the fund total at €4.2 million and covers programs including food distribution sites, youth mentoring and home support visits for older residents.

The decision follows the release of the city's 2025 annual service report, which recorded 2,180 new applications for assistance between January and December. Council documents list rising requests for emergency food parcels and after-school care as the main drivers behind the budget adjustment.

Effects on daily access in Born neighbourhoods

Residents who use the Born Central Food Hub on Market Street will see the site open an additional two days each month starting in September. The extra days are projected to reach 340 households currently on waiting lists. Home-care coordinators in the North District have been told to add 180 weekly visits for clients over age 75, according to the council's implementation memo.

Youth centres in the Riverside and Hilltop wards receive €120,000 of the new money to extend operating hours until 8 p.m. on weekdays. The schedule change is listed in the approved resolution as a direct response to parent surveys collected by the Born Parks and Recreation Department in May.

Next steps for rollout and reporting

City staff must submit quarterly usage reports to the council beginning in October. The first report will cover enrolment numbers at each funded site and any changes in average wait times. The legislation states that unspent funds at the end of the fiscal year return to the general reserve rather than carrying forward automatically.

Procurement notices for additional food supplies and staffing contracts are scheduled to appear on the city website by July 22. Local service providers have until August 15 to submit updated service plans that match the new funding levels.
