State Capital Invests €52 Million to Repair Gothic Quarter Roads, Bridges

The State Capital Works Acceleration Act 2026, passed by the regional legislature on 7 July, assigns 52 million euros to infrastructure contracts in Gothic Quarter and adjacent districts. The measure covers road resurfacing, bridge inspections and expanded bus priority lanes. It applies to projects already listed in the 2025-2027 capital works schedule.

Regional budget papers released in May identified a 14 percent shortfall in maintenance spending for historic districts. The new act accelerates release of those funds rather than creating fresh revenue. Policy analysts note that the timing aligns with the end of the current fiscal quarter and the need to commit remaining capital allocations before the August recess.

Jobs and daily services for residents

Local construction firms registered with the Gothic Quarter chamber of commerce will be eligible to bid on the first round of contracts. The legislation states that at least 40 percent of the work hours must go to workers whose primary residence lies inside the district boundaries. Bus lane upgrades on Via Laietana are projected to shorten peak-hour travel times for the 18,400 daily commuters who board at the Plaça de Catalunya stop.

The same document lists 1,200 full-time equivalent positions tied to the projects over a three-year period. Maintenance crews will focus on the medieval stone bridges at Carrer del Call and Carrer de Montsió, where inspections last occurred in 2019. Residents who rely on those routes for deliveries or emergency access will see scheduled closures limited to overnight hours under the new timetable.

Next steps for implementation

The regional transport authority must publish tender documents by 15 August. Local advocates note that the first awards are expected before the end of September. The legislation requires quarterly progress reports to be posted on the district council website, with the first update due in October.
