Sarria Municipal Council Adopts 2026 Community Services Ordinance, Adjusting Local Aid Eligibility

The Sarria Municipal Council passed the Community Services Ordinance on 7 July 2026. The measure changes eligibility thresholds and adds positions at the three municipal social service offices located in the city center, the northern district and the southern industrial zone.

Local government records show the ordinance responds to updated regional welfare guidelines issued in early 2026. Council documents cite rising demand for in-person assistance recorded during the 2025 fiscal year, when 4,200 resident inquiries were logged across the three centers.

Changes for residents who use the programs

Under the new rules, households earning up to 28,000 euros annually now qualify for direct referrals to subsidized housing support. The ordinance also extends operating hours at the northern district center until 7 p.m. on weekdays, allowing shift workers in the industrial zone to schedule appointments without taking time off. Local advocates note that families previously turned away at the income limit will receive initial assessments within ten business days of application.

The 2026-2027 municipal budget allocates 2.8 million euros to the expanded services, according to the council's adopted expenditure lines. This figure covers eight additional caseworker positions and an increase in emergency housing vouchers from 120 to 180 per quarter.

Next steps in rollout

Staff recruitment begins in August 2026, with the first new hires expected to start training by September. The ordinance requires quarterly public reports on application volumes and wait times, to be posted on the municipal website starting in October. Residents can submit inquiries at any of the three centers or through the council's online portal once the updated intake forms are published next month.
