Sarria Voters Decide September 2026: New Waste Fees Begin January 2027

The Sarria City Council has placed a referendum on the September 2026 ballot that would raise household waste collection fees by 18 percent to fund expanded recycling infrastructure. The measure directly affects the 28,400 residential accounts served by the municipal sanitation department.

Current fees have remained unchanged since the 2023 budget cycle, when the council last adjusted rates to cover rising fuel and labor costs. Local records show the sanitation department handled 9,200 tonnes of household waste last year, with 34 percent diverted to recycling under existing programs.

Effects on household budgets and service delivery

Under the proposal, a typical single-family home would see its quarterly waste bill rise from 48 euros to 56.60 euros beginning with the January 2027 statement. Apartment buildings would face proportional increases scaled to unit count, with the added revenue directed to new collection routes and sorting facilities located on the eastern edge of the city.

The legislation states that fee revenue must be ring-fenced for waste operations and cannot be transferred to the general fund. Policy analysts note that the ordinance also requires quarterly public reporting on diversion rates starting in the second half of 2027.

Implementation steps after the vote

If approved, the council must adopt final rates by November 2026 and mail updated payment schedules to all accounts by December 15. The government says the policy will produce the first visible service changes, including additional blue-bin pickups, in March 2027.
