Sarria Tightens Electoral Media Rules Before November Council Elections

The Sarria City Council implemented the Electoral Media Access Policy on 1 July 2026, mandating equal broadcast segments on publicly funded outlets for all 12 candidates contesting five council seats. The rule applies to the municipal radio service and the city website, which together reach an estimated 45,000 local households.

The policy stems from the 2025 Electoral Reform Act passed by the regional assembly. That legislation requires every municipality above 50,000 residents to allocate fixed media slots during the three months before polling day, with Sarria’s November vote falling under the first full cycle of enforcement.

Effects on Resident Information Sources

Residents will receive candidate statements in 90-second blocks on the municipal radio station rather than extended interviews granted at the outlet’s discretion. A household in the industrial zone, for example, will hear the same duration of remarks on local transport funding from each candidate during the evening news bulletin. In contrast, municipalities that have not yet updated their media contracts continue to allow longer unscripted segments for frontrunners.

The 2026 municipal budget document records an allocation of 180,000 euros for production of these segments and two live debates at the Civic Centre. The figure appears under the Communications Department line item and covers technical costs only, with no additional staff positions created.

Schedule Through Election Day

The first mandated debate is set for 15 August at the Civic Centre, followed by three additional forums before early voting opens on 20 October. The city clerk’s office has published the rotation order on its public portal, listing candidate names in alphabetical order for each slot. Residents can access the schedule through the same site used for property tax payments and waste collection notices.
