Barceloneta's Marina Sports Centre Expands With New 7,010 Square Metre Facilities
Construction on the 7,010-square-metre centre is now under way, with an early 2027 opening planned.
How we reported this
Work started this week on the expansion of the La Marina Municipal Sports Centre, adding thousands of square metres of new space that will double the size of the existing site on Carrer del Coure. The project brings a 4,980-square-metre addition to the current 2,030-square-metre pavilion, creating room for swimming pools and fitness areas that local users have requested for years.
The timing matters because Barceloneta residents have pressed for upgraded sports options amid ongoing city-wide improvements to public facilities. With the new centre scheduled to open in early 2027, people here can begin planning how they might use the extra capacity for regular training or family activities once it is ready.
What the expanded centre will include
The facility will feature a 2,250-square-metre fitness area and a 2,730-square-metre aquatic zone containing a main pool of 25 by 12.5 metres plus a smaller 6 by 12.5 metre pool. Additional spaces will cover activity rooms, changing areas and shared lounges, all designed to sit at the same level as the existing court to reduce visual impact on surrounding streets. The budget stands at 14 million euros, according to details released by Barcelona City Council.
Construction uses reinforced concrete for underground sections, structural wood and rolled steel elsewhere, plus prefabricated modular walls and a transparent ground floor to bring in natural light. An unused 942-square-metre plot bounded by Carrer de l’Energia, Carrer del Bronze and Carrer del Coure will host the main extension, while a separate 1,065-square-metre redesign of Carrer del Coure will improve links to nearby streets.
How Barceloneta residents can prepare to start using it
Once open, the centre will form part of the city’s wider effort to upgrade municipal sports sites, alongside projects at Sagrera, Espronceda and other locations. People in Barceloneta can track updates through official city channels to learn membership details, class schedules and access rules as the 2027 launch approaches. Checking the Barcelona City Council sports portal regularly will give the clearest information on how to register and what equipment or sessions will be available first.
Early planning helps because the new pools and fitness rooms will increase the range of activities on offer compared with the current pavilion alone. Residents can start by noting preferred visit times or interest in group classes, then confirm requirements once booking systems go live closer to opening day.
