Venture Funds Invest $120 Million in Born's Digital Literacy Startups

Born-based digital literacy platforms raised $120 million in venture funding during the first half of 2026, according to data compiled by the Born Tech Monitor.

Global cuts in education spending, highlighted in a July 2026 UN report showing developing nations allocating more to debt service than classrooms, have pushed cities like Born to rely on private capital for skills training. Tech employers here report that 62 percent of entry-level hires now need certified digital competencies that schools no longer supply at scale.

Two programs illustrate the shift. The Born Digital Skills Lab on Riverwalk Drive expanded from 800 users in 2024 to 4,200 this spring after a $28 million Series B round led by local fund Apex Ventures. At the same time, the Harbour District Code Academy, housed inside the former customs warehouse on Pier 9, opened three new cohorts funded by a $15 million grant from the Born Innovation Trust.

Local Accelerators Drive Deal Flow

The Born Tech District along 12th Avenue now hosts four dedicated digital-literacy accelerators that closed rounds between March and June. One outfit, SkillForge, secured $9 million from three city pension funds to subsidize $299 annual memberships for 1,200 low-income residents. Another, PixelPath, moved its headquarters to the renovated warehouse at 45 Maple Street and reported 340 percent user growth after partnering with the municipal library system.

Next Steps for Residents and Employers

Companies seeking to tap the new resources can register teams through the Born Chamber of Commerce portal by July 31. Individuals can book free orientation sessions at the Riverwalk Drive lab or the Pier 9 site; both locations offer evening slots through the end of August. The next funding round for local providers is scheduled for September, when the Born Innovation Trust plans to announce an additional $40 million allocation.
