Barceloneta Expands Family-Friendly Cycling Routes Along Protected Waterfront Paths
New protected lanes on local streets and parks give parents and new riders direct access to flat paths without crossing heavy traffic.

City crews finished marking two new family cycling routes in Barceloneta on 1 July 2026, adding 4.2 kilometres of separated lanes that start at the beachfront and stay level the entire way.
Parents in the neighbourhood have asked for safer options since visitor numbers on the waterfront rose 18 percent last summer. Flat terrain and short distances matter for households with children under ten who want to ride without climbing hills or mixing with delivery vans.
Two routes now open
The first route runs along Carrer del Dr. Aiguader from Plaça del Mar to the Moll de la Fusta, then turns onto a painted lane beside Passeig Marítim. The second loop begins at the south entrance of Parc de la Barceloneta, circles the central lawn twice, and returns via Carrer de la Sal via a new curb-protected path installed by the district office. Both segments connect directly to the Bicing station at Carrer de Ginebra 12, where standard and cargo bikes are available.
Barceloneta’s neighbourhood association and the district sports office ran a joint test day on 28 June. Forty families signed up and rode the full circuit without leaving the marked lanes. Instructors from the local “Bici per Tots” program checked helmets and gave short lessons on hand signals before the groups set off.
Numbers and costs
The district spent 92,000 euros on paint, bollards and signage. Rental fees at the Ginebra station start at 3 euros for the first hour and 1.50 euros for each additional half hour. On the first weekend after opening, 310 family groups checked out bikes between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to the station log.
City transport data show average speeds on these new lanes stay below 12 kilometres per hour, well under the 20-kilometre limit posted on the signs. The lanes are swept twice weekly and checked for glass every morning before 8 a.m.
Families who want to try the routes can pick up a free paper map at the Parc de la Barceloneta information kiosk or download the district cycling app that shows real-time lane status. Riders are asked to yield at the two marked crossings on Passeig Marítim and to keep to the right when groups stop for photos at the beachfront viewpoints.
