The psychological engagement with content, whether you're doom-scrolling conflict footage or watching calming landscape videos, may matter as much as the photons hitting your retinas. Stress hormones, not just light, are doing heavy lifting in keeping you awake.

Keeping the bedroom cool, between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius, supports the body's natural core temperature drop that accompanies sleep onset. And the content question does matter: a 2022 study out of the University of Groningen tracked 1,200 adults over six months and found that social media use specifically, not passive video streaming, was the strongest screen-related predictor of delayed sleep onset, with an average delay of 22 minutes in heavy users.
