Eixample Expands Protected Cycling Routes for Families and Beginners
New protected paths through district parks give parents and new riders low-stress options away from heavy traffic.

Three new protected cycling loops opened this week in the Eixample, giving families and first-time riders direct access to flat, shaded paths inside Parc Joan Miró and along the western edge of Avinguda Diagonal.
Summer demand for outdoor activity has risen sharply in Barcelona as residents look for low-cost ways to exercise while temperatures climb above 30 degrees most afternoons. City transport records show bike trips in the Eixample rose 18 percent between May and June compared with the same period last year, driven mainly by households with children under 12.
Routes through named parks and streets
The shortest loop begins at the entrance to Parc Joan Miró on Carrer de Tarragona, circles the central pond on a 1.8-kilometre sealed track, then returns via the new bike lane on Carrer de Llançà. A second route starts at the Bicing station outside the Mercat de la Concepció on Carrer de Roger de Llúria and follows the wide central reservation of Carrer d’Aragó westward for 3 kilometres before linking to the Diagonal path near Plaça de les Glòries. Both loops avoid steep grades and keep riders inside the district’s grid of one-way streets with 30 km/h limits.
The Associació de Veïns de l’Eixample coordinated the paint and signage with the city’s mobility department; the group also runs a free Saturday morning led ride for beginners that departs from the same Mercat de la Concepció station at 9:30 a.m.
Numbers and costs
Barcelona City Council data released on 5 July list 4.2 kilometres of new family-grade bike infrastructure added inside Eixample boundaries since January 2025. A standard Bicing annual pass costs 47.16 euros; a 30-day family add-on that covers one adult and two children under 16 is priced at 22 euros. Helmets and child seats remain available for 2 euros per day at the Parc Joan Miró Bicing point.
Residents who want to try the routes before committing to a pass can rent a standard city bike for a single 30-minute trip at 0.75 euros from any station inside the district. Parents are advised to check the Bicing app for real-time availability before heading out, especially on weekday evenings after 7 p.m. when demand peaks.
