Eixample Night Shift Workers Combat Sleep Chaos With Light Timing
Eixample residents on night shifts at hospitals and transport firms are testing timed light exposure and fixed meal windows to regain consistent rest.
How we reported this
More than 1,200 Eixample residents registered for the city’s shift-work sleep pilot between January and June 2026 after reporting average nightly sleep below five hours.
The rise tracks new rosters at Hospital Clínic and the metro maintenance crews based at the Verdaguer depot, where staff alternate between 22:00-06:00 and 14:00-22:00 blocks. City health data released last month showed a 19 percent increase in insomnia prescriptions among adults aged 25-45 living between Carrer de Balmes and Avinguda Diagonal.
Local programmes already in place
The Eixample District Wellness Office on Carrer de Mallorca runs a six-week course that pairs participants with a chronobiology coach and supplies wearable light meters for €45. A second group meets weekly at the rooftop studio of Espai Esquerra on Carrer de València, where former nurses demonstrate 20-minute wind-down sequences using blackout masks and white-noise tracks calibrated to 45 decibels.
Both programmes require participants to log shift start times and caffeine intake for the first fortnight, then adjust exposure to morning daylight within 30 minutes of waking regardless of clock time.
Evidence and next steps
A 2025 review by the Catalan Sleep Society tracked 340 Barcelona shift workers and recorded a 42-minute average gain in total sleep time after eight weeks of fixed meal spacing and consistent 10-lux bedroom lighting after 09:00. Participants who attended at least four sessions also cut melatonin supplement use by half.
Residents can book an initial assessment at the Wellness Office by 15 July for the autumn cohort; places are limited to 60 and cost €120, which includes the light meter and two follow-up calls. Those outside the district can access the same protocols through the city’s online portal using their local health card number.
