Residents have shifted more of their outdoor routines to the narrow paths that run behind the old stone walls near Carrer del Call, where foot traffic stays low even on summer mornings.

Wellness routines in the quarter gained fresh attention after city data showed a 22 percent rise in park visits between March and June this year, driven by people seeking steady exercise without the crowds that fill the main squares. The change matters because many locals balance desk work with short daily outings that keep joints mobile and stress levels in check, and the quieter routes let them do that without negotiating tour groups.

Two overlooked routes in daily use

The first stretch begins at the rear entrance of Plaça de Sant Felip Neri and follows a gravel lane that drops toward the old city wall remnants along Carrer de la Palla. Locals call it the Neri loop; it measures just under 1.8 kilometres and includes two short stair sets that double as body-weight intervals. A second option starts at the eastern edge of Jardins de la Muralla and winds through the shaded side of Parc del Silenci before rejoining Carrer del Bisbe. Both segments are maintained by the Gothic Quarter Greenways program, which posts updated surface reports every Monday on its notice boards at the neighbourhood centre on Carrer d'Avinyó.

Usage numbers come from the district's 2025 parks audit released in late June. That document recorded 1,240 unique swipe-card entries at the two trailheads between January and May, compared with 890 the previous year. Entry remains free, though the Greenways group charges 8 euros for a printed map that includes elevation profiles and nearest water fountains. The same audit noted that 64 percent of recorded users live within four blocks of the routes.

Anyone can begin at the Neri loop entrance before 9 a.m. to avoid residual foot traffic from nearby cafés. Bring water and wear shoes with grip for the stone sections. The Greenways program offers a free orientation walk on the first Saturday of each month; the next session is scheduled for 8 July at 8:30 a.m. at the Carrer d'Avinyó notice board. Residents who want longer outings can link the two routes via the short connector path that crosses Plaça del Rei, adding roughly 800 metres without entering any ticketed sites.
