Poblenou Residents Launch Free Walking Groups Along Rambla
Poblenou residents are forming small walking circles along the Rambla to build routine fitness without gym fees or long commutes.
How we reported this
Forty-three neighbours met at the north end of Rambla del Poblenou on 7 July to plot a first route for a twice-weekly walking group that will begin next month.
Interest has grown since the city completed new gravel paths through Parc del Poblenou in March 2025, giving residents a flat, shaded loop that starts at Carrer de Pere IV and finishes near Plaça de la Unió.
Pick a route and a time that fits the street
Most groups settle on an early slot before 9am or an evening start after 7pm to avoid the busiest hours on Carrer de Bilbao. The Parc del Poblenou loop measures 2.8 kilometres and takes 35 minutes at a conversational pace, according to the neighbourhood association that measured it last spring.
Meetings rotate between the fountain at Rambla del Poblenou number 42 and the shaded benches outside Can Framis on Carrer de Roc Boronat, so no single household hosts every week.
Keep costs low and records simple
A 2025 Barcelona Public Health Agency survey found that residents who joined neighbourhood walking groups reported a 30 percent drop in feelings of isolation after eight weeks. Groups in Poblenou typically collect 3 euros per person each month to cover printed route cards and basic first-aid supplies.
Send the date, start point and expected pace in a single WhatsApp message to the street chat three days before the first walk. One volunteer keeps a paper sign-up sheet at the meeting spot so new participants can add a phone number without downloading another app.
After the first month the same volunteer can check with the Associació de Veïns del Poblenou about reserving the small meeting room at the civic centre on Carrer de Llull if the group grows past twenty people.
Print a one-page map with two rain alternatives and hand it out on the second walk so members can lead future sessions without extra planning.
