Poblenou Residents Launch Summer Walking Groups in Neighbourhood
Poblenou residents can launch a neighbourhood walking group by picking a regular route and recruiting a small core of participants this summer.
How we reported this

Five neighbours met at the entrance to Mercat del Poblenou on Carrer de la Llacuna at 7:30 a.m. on 8 July to map out their first weekly route through the district.
Interest in organised community walks has grown since the city health department extended its 2025-2027 active-living plan, which earmarks funds for resident-led fitness initiatives in districts like Poblenou. The plan follows data showing that only 38 percent of Barcelona adults meet recommended weekly activity levels, a figure unchanged since 2023.
Routes that already work
Groups have used the straight path along Rambla del Poblenou to Parc del Poblenou and back, a 4.2-kilometre loop that stays flat and shaded. Another option starts at Plaça de la Unió and heads toward the beachfront path at Platja de la Mar Bella, finishing at Centre Cívic Can Felipa for water and a quick stretch. Both routes pass public drinking fountains and benches every 800 metres.
A 2024 Barcelona Public Health Agency survey recorded a 31 percent rise in group walking sessions across the city after similar loops were promoted through district civic centres. Participants paid an average of €12 for a six-month insurance and first-aid kit organised through the Associació de Veïns del Poblenou.
First steps that keep the group going
Print a simple sign-up sheet and leave it at the Mercat del Poblenou information desk for one week. Set the first walk for the following Monday at a fixed time. Send a group message the night before with the meeting point and expected pace. After three sessions, ask members to suggest any changes to distance or start time. Local civic centres can provide free printed maps and a contact number for the district sports office if the group grows beyond twenty people.
